Care Guide

Ectatomma ruidum is a fascinating neotropical species that offers a wonderful introduction to ant keeping, especially for those interested in observing a semi-claustral founding process. The queen, measuring 9–11 mm, is a robust and active hunter – she must forage for food to feed her first brood, making her early days a captivating spectacle. Workers are slightly smaller, ranging from 6–8 mm, and the colony eventually reaches a manageable size of 100 to 500 individuals. Unlike many common species, Ectatomma ruidum does not exhibit pronounced polymorphism; workers are all similar in size and shape, but their energetic hunting behavior more than makes up for the visual uniformity.

One of the most rewarding aspects of keeping Ectatomma ruidum is watching their hunting instincts in action. These ants are swift, visual predators that actively pursue small insects such as fruit flies, crickets, and mealworms. Their diet also includes sugar water and honeydew, providing a balanced mix of protein and carbohydrates. Because they do not require hibernation, they remain active and engaging year-round, making them an excellent choice for keepers in climates where winter cooling is difficult. Their semi-claustral nature means that during the founding phase, the queen will need regular feedings of small insects – a small extra effort compared to fully claustral species, but one that rewards you with a front-row seat to the colony’s earliest struggles and triumphs.

Care difficulty

Keeping Ectatomma ruidum is straightforward and well-suited for beginners, provided the keeper is comfortable with a semi-claustral founding stage. The colony’s modest size and simple dietary needs simplify routine maintenance. The main challenge is ensuring a steady supply of appropriately sized live or freshly killed insects during the early weeks, but this quickly becomes a habit. Their resilience and lack of hibernation requirements make them a forgiving species for new enthusiasts.

Housing

A suitable formicarium for Ectatomma ruidum should maintain a temperature range of 24–28°C and high humidity around 70–80%. A combination of a nest area with moist substrate (such as a sand-clay mix or plaster) and a dry outworld works well. These ants appreciate a well-structured outworld with hiding spots and a clear foraging area. Regular misting of the nest section is essential to keep humidity high, especially during brood development. They are not particularly sensitive to light or vibrations once established, but providing a dark, quiet nest zone helps them feel secure.

First days after purchase

Upon receiving your Ectatomma ruidum colony, place the formicarium in a calm, dimly lit location and allow the ants to settle. For the first few days, minimize disturbances and simply ensure they have access to clean water (via a test tube or water feeder) and a small insect or sugar water source. Observe from a distance – you may see the queen or workers actively hunting. Avoid handling or moving the nest unnecessarily. After a few days, you can gradually increase feeding and begin enjoying the daily activity of these lively, personable ants.
