Care Guide

Cataglyphis hispanica is a striking desert ant species, renowned for its remarkable speed and heat tolerance. Often called the “Spanish silver ant” for the iridescent sheen of its exoskeleton, this species is a true specialist of arid landscapes. Workers are slender and long-legged, measuring 5–10 mm, and can sprint across the hottest surfaces at astonishing speeds, making them a fascinating spectacle in captivity. The queen is slightly larger at 9–12 mm, and while the colony remains modest compared to other species—reaching between 500 and 2,000 workers—each individual is highly active and responsive to environmental cues. One of the most notable behaviors of Cataglyphis hispanica is its thermophilic nature; these ants require a warm, dry environment and will only forage when the temperature is at its highest, often retreating deeper into the nest during cooler periods.

As a semi-claustral founder, the queen must hunt for food to feed her first brood, which makes the initial stage of colony development more demanding than for fully claustral species. In the wild, these ants are swift predators and scavengers, feeding on small insects and other protein sources. In captivity, a diet rich in insects—such as fruit flies, mealworms, and crickets—should be supplemented with sugar water or diluted honey to provide the energy needed for their fast-paced lifestyle. Protein is especially important for brood development, and offering a variety of live or freshly killed prey will keep the colony thriving. Unlike seed-based species, Cataglyphis hispanica does not store large amounts of food, so regular feeding is essential.

Care difficulty

Keeping Cataglyphis hispanica is best suited for experienced ant keepers. The combination of semi-claustral founding, precise temperature requirements, and a need for low humidity places this species firmly in the advanced category. Beginners may struggle with the queen’s hunting demands during colony establishment and the challenge of maintaining the high temperatures these ants require without drying out their environment. Additionally, their incredible speed can make feeding and maintenance tricky; escape prevention must be meticulous, as they are adept climbers and will exploit even the smallest gap.

Housing

A formicarium for Cataglyphis hispanica should mimic their native arid habitat. Provide a nest with good ventilation and a separate, heated outworld where the ants can bask. Temperature gradients are crucial: a spot reaching up to 32°C with a cooler area around 24°C allows the ants to thermoregulate. Humidity must be kept very low, between 30 and 50%—excess moisture can lead to fungal issues and stress the colony. Use a substrate that drains well, such as sand or a sand-clay mix, and avoid overwatering the nest. A shallow water source, like a test tube with a cotton plug, should be offered in the outworld. Hibernation is mandatory during winter; the colony needs to be gradually cooled to 12°C for several months to maintain their natural life cycle.

First days after purchase

Upon receiving your Cataglyphis hispanica colony, transfer it gently into a prepared setup with a heated area and a cool refuge. Place the formicarium in a quiet spot and resist the urge to disturb them. Provide a small amount of food, such as a crushed fruit fly or a drop of sugar water, near the nest entrance. During the first week, observe from a distance—these ants are sensitive to vibrations and sudden light changes. Allow the queen to settle and the first workers to acclimate. With patience and attention to temperature, your colony will soon display the remarkable speed and heat-loving behavior that makes this species so rewarding for dedicated keepers.
