Care Guide

Nylanderia bourbonica is a delightfully unassuming ant species that offers a perfect entry point into the world of ant keeping. These small, fast-moving ants are often found in warm, tropical regions, and their colonies are built around a single, claustrally founding queen. The queen herself is modest in size, measuring just 4–5 mm, while the workers range from 1.8 to 2.5 mm. Though they lack the dramatic polymorphism of some larger species, Nylanderia bourbonica make up for it with sheer energy and numbers. A mature colony can swell to between 500 and 3,000 workers, creating a constant buzz of activity as they explore their environment with characteristic speed and purpose.

One of the most appealing traits of Nylanderia bourbonica is their dietary flexibility. They are eager foragers that thrive on a mix of protein and carbohydrates. Small insects such as fruit flies, crickets, or mealworms are readily accepted, while sugar water or honeydew provides the energy they need to maintain their rapid pace. Because they do not require complex seed processing or fungus farming, feeding is straightforward, and their appetite ensures that leftovers are quickly cleaned up.

Care difficulty

Keeping Nylanderia bourbonica is an excellent choice for beginners. Their claustral founding means the queen does not need to be fed during the initial weeks of colony establishment—she simply seals herself in a dark, humid chamber and raises her first brood on her own fat reserves. Once workers appear, the colony’s hardy nature and forgiving temperature and humidity requirements make daily care simple and rewarding. There is no need for hibernation, so you can enjoy observing them year-round without any seasonal adjustments.

Housing

These ants adapt well to standard formicariums with a connected outworld. The nest area should maintain a humidity level between 50 and 70%, easily achieved by moistening a section of the substrate or using a water reservoir. Ambient temperatures between 22 and 28°C suit them perfectly—room temperature is often sufficient, though a gentle heat mat can help if your home runs cool. The outworld should provide space for foraging, with a small dish of sugar water and a supply of insects. Thanks to their small size, even a modest setup can house a growing colony comfortably. Nylanderia bourbonica are sensitive to excessive vibration and bright light, so place their home in a quiet, dimly lit spot.

First days after purchase

When your colony arrives, transfer them gently into their prepared formicarium and place it in a calm location. For the first few days, resist the urge to open the nest or move the enclosure frequently. Simply ensure the moisture level is correct and that a small drop of sugar water is available in the outworld. Watch from a respectful distance—you will soon see workers begin to explore and forage, a sure sign that they are settling in. With patience and a light touch, your Nylanderia bourbonica colony will quickly become a lively, low-maintenance window into the fascinating world of ants.
