Care Guide

Crematogaster biroi, commonly known as the acrobat ant, earns its name from the characteristic way workers raise their heart-shaped gasters over their heads when alarmed—a striking display that hints at their lively temperament. These medium-sized ants are naturally arboreal, nesting in dead wood, hollow stems, and sometimes in human structures, which makes them fascinating to observe as they deftly navigate vertical surfaces. The queen measures between 5 and 7 mm, while workers range from 2 to 4 mm, and a mature colony can reach several thousand individuals, filling a formicarium with constant, purposeful activity. Unlike many species, Crematogaster biroi possesses a defensive sting and a potent venom, so care should be taken during maintenance—though they are not aggressive toward their keeper if given proper space.

One of the most engaging aspects of this species is its dietary flexibility. These ants gladly accept a variety of foods, including live or freshly killed insects like fruit flies, crickets, and mealworms, as well as sugar water, honey water, and ripe, soft fruits. They also feed on honeydew if offered a source, making them relatively easy to provision. A diverse diet promotes strong brood development and colony growth, so rotating protein and carbohydrates is recommended. Because they do not require hibernation, they remain active year-round, provided temperatures are kept in the warm range of 24–28°C and humidity is maintained between 60 and 80%. This tropical preference simplifies seasonal care: no cold period, no special brumation setup.

Care difficulty

Crematogaster biroi is considered an intermediate-level species, mainly due to their sensitivity to disturbance and their tendency to escape if the enclosure is not properly sealed. Their agility and climbing ability mean that any exit route must be thoroughly blocked—olive oil or fluon barriers on the outworld walls are essential. Additionally, their defensive response can make feeding and cleaning a bit more challenging than with docile species. However, for keepers with some experience, they are highly rewarding, with rapid colony growth and fascinating social behavior.

Housing

Provide a formicarium that offers both a humid nest area and a dry, well-ventilated outworld. A nest made of acrylic or grouted cork with chambers that can retain moisture works well. Since Crematogaster biroi naturally nests in wood, adding small pieces of soft wood or cork bark inside the nest encourages natural tunneling behavior. The outworld should have good climbing surfaces—perhaps a branch or textured wall—and a secure lid. Humidity inside the nest is critical: 60–80% prevents desiccation of larvae, while the outworld can be drier. Offer water via a test tube with cotton or a hydration system.

First days after purchase

Upon receiving your colony, transfer the ants into the prepared formicarium in a calm, dimly lit room. Place the setup in a quiet location away from vibrations and direct sunlight. Allow the colony at least 24–48 hours to settle before offering food. Provide a small drop of sugar water and a tiny insect piece near the nest entrance. Resist the urge to observe too closely; patience here pays off with faster acclimation. Over the next week, gradually increase light and movement around the enclosure as the ants become more comfortable. Within a fortnight, you’ll see their acrobatic postures and industrious foraging—proof that your new colony is thriving.
