Care Guide

Solenopsis fugax, commonly known as the thief ant, is a small but resourceful species that lives up to its name. The queen, measuring 5 to 6.5 mm, is considerably larger than the workers, which range from just 1.5 to 2.5 mm. Despite their tiny size, these ants are fast, agile, and possess a powerful sting relative to their dimensions. The colony size may reach up to 15,000 workers, forming a bustling underground network. What truly sets Solenopsis fugax apart is their kleptoparasitic lifestyle — in the wild, they infiltrate the nests of other ant species, stealing their brood and food resources. This raiding behavior makes them fascinating to observe, though it also means they require a steady supply of protein and a carefully designed setup to prevent escapes.

Care difficulty

Keeping Solenopsis fugax is considered intermediate, mainly because their small size demands attention to detail. They need a consistent source of protein — live insects or meat-based foods — alongside sugar water to thrive. Their raiding instinct can be satisfied by offering insect prey, but no companion ant species are needed for this behavior in captivity. The main challenge lies in containment: workers can squeeze through remarkably tiny gaps, so the formicarium must be escape-proof. Regular feeding and maintenance of humidity are also essential for colony growth.

Housing

A suitable formicarium for Solenopsis fugax should feature fine ventilation mesh (no wider than 0.5 mm) and tightly sealed joints. The nest area should be kept at 50–70% humidity and temperatures between 22 and 28°C. These ants appreciate a moist, dark retreat where they can store their stolen treasures. A small outworld with a feeding dish works well, but ensure no gaps around tubing or connections. During winter, a hibernation period at around 10°C is required for healthy colony development — reduce feeding and humidity slightly during this time, but never let the nest dry out completely.

First days after purchase

Upon receiving your Solenopsis fugax colony, place the formicarium in a quiet, dimly lit location and allow the ants to settle for at least 24 hours. Avoid shaking or tapping the setup. Offer a drop of sugar water and a small insect (like a fruit fly or pinhead cricket) to encourage foraging. Observe that the workers may initially be skittish — give them time to establish their nest. Ensure the water source is always accessible but not flooding. With patience, you’ll soon witness their bold, thieving nature as they quickly discover and transport food.
