Care Guide

Diacamma rugosum is a fascinating species that challenges the traditional notion of ant colonies. Unlike most ants, this species does not have a true queen. Instead, reproduction is carried out by one or a few mated workers called gamergates, which are essentially egg-laying workers that have undergone mating. This makes the colony highly resilient—if a gamergate is lost, another worker can take her place. Workers are uniformly sized at around 8–10 mm, with a sleek black exoskeleton and powerful mandibles. They are known for their aggressive defensive behavior and will readily sting if disturbed, earning them a reputation as spirited ants to keep.

These ants are semi-claustral founders, meaning that a newly mated gamergate must leave the nest to forage for food while raising her first brood. This makes the founding stage more labor-intensive compared to fully claustral species. During this period, the founding female requires regular protein feedings to produce eggs. Once the first workers arrive, the colony grows steadily, reaching anywhere from 50 to 500 individuals. Diacamma rugosum thrives in warm, humid conditions, with an optimal temperature range between 24 and 30°C and relative humidity of 70 to 90 percent. The nest must remain damp but not waterlogged, with good ventilation to prevent mold.

Care difficulty

Keeping Diacamma rugosum is best suited for intermediate keepers. Their semi-claustral founding requires more attention during the early stages, and their feisty temperament demands careful handling. Once established, they are not particularly demanding, but they do need a consistent supply of protein and sugar. Live or pre-killed insects—such as fruit flies, crickets, or roaches—should be offered regularly alongside sugar water or honeydew. They will also scavenge for protein-rich treats like boiled egg or commercial ant jelly. These ants are diurnal and can be observed actively foraging in bright light, though sudden vibrations may cause them to retreat or become agitated.

Housing

A formicarium for Diacamma rugosum should maintain high humidity, especially in the nest area. A setup with a moistened substrate or a separate hydration chamber works well. Because they are skilled climbers and can sting, a secure lid with fluon or oil barriers is essential. Provide a clean outworld with a water source and feeding area. As the colony grows, they will appreciate tunnels or chambers that mimic their natural underground nests. Avoid overly dry environments, as larvae are sensitive to desiccation.

First days after purchase

Upon arrival, transfer your Diacamma rugosum colony into a pre-moistened nest and place it in a quiet, dimly lit location. Offer a small drop of sugar water and a tiny insect piece, then leave them undisturbed for at least 48 hours to acclimate. Do not open the enclosure unnecessarily during this time. Over the following days, observe for signs of brood development and foraging behavior. If the founding gamergate seems stressed, reduce light and vibration further. With patience and steady care, you will soon witness the vigorous activity that makes this species so rewarding to keep.
