Care Guide

Myrmica Specioides is a charismatic and moderately sized ant species known for its slender build and lively temperament. The queen measures between 5.5 and 7 millimetres, while workers are slightly smaller at 4 to 5.5 millimetres. Though the colony does not display the extreme polymorphism seen in some seed harvesters, workers exhibit subtle size variation that reflects their roles within the nest. What truly sets these ants apart is their active, fast-moving nature and their powerful sting, which they use both for subduing prey and defending the colony. In the wild, they inhabit moist, grassy meadows and forest edges, often nesting under stones or in rotting wood.

Diet

Myrmica Specioides are generalist predators and scavengers. Their diet is rich in protein from live or freshly killed insects such as fruit flies, crickets, and mealworms. They will also readily accept sugar water or honey water as an energy source for the workers. A balanced diet is essential — too little protein and the queen will struggle to produce brood, while a steady supply of sugars keeps the foragers active. Unlike seed-dependent species, these ants require a consistent source of insect protein, which makes them slightly more demanding than beginner-friendly harvesters.

Care difficulty

Keeping Myrmica Specioides is best suited for intermediate ant keepers. Their semi-claustral founding means the queen must be fed during the early stages, which requires regular small feedings and careful observation. The colony is also sensitive to sudden changes in temperature and humidity, and they need a proper winter diapause to thrive. While not overly fragile, they demand a keeper who can maintain stable conditions and provide a varied menu.

Housing

A formicarium with good humidity control is crucial. Maintain humidity levels between 55 and 75 percent, and keep temperatures in the range of 18 to 24 degrees Celsius. The nest should offer a gradient of moisture so the ants can choose their preferred zone. A test tube setup works well for founding, but as the colony grows, a standard acrylic or ytong nest with a connected outworld becomes ideal. These ants are very active and will appreciate a well-ventilated outworld with hiding spots and a clean water source. Hibernation is mandatory — from late autumn through early spring, gradually lower the temperature to around 5 degrees Celsius and reduce feeding for a period of two to three months.

First days after purchase

Upon receiving your Myrmica Specioides colony, transfer them carefully into their new setup, then place the formicarium in a quiet, dimly lit location. Minimize vibrations and avoid opening the nest frequently. Offer a small drop of sugar water and a tiny insect piece near the entrance, but do not disturb them if they retreat. Give them at least 48 hours to acclimatize before checking on progress. Patience is key — once settled, these ants become wonderfully rewarding to observe, especially during feeding times when their hunting instincts come to life.
