These ants display a clear polymorphism, with workers ranging from small minors around three millimeters to robust majors and soldiers that can reach ten millimeters in length. The queen, the largest individual in the colony, measures between ten and thirteen millimeters. The larger workers possess powerful mandibles designed for milling seeds, and the colony as a whole is known for its industrious foraging trails and orderly granaries.
The diet of Messor pergandei is primarily granivorous, with seeds forming the foundation of their nutrition. These resourceful ants will collect a wide variety of seeds, transporting them back to the nest where they are stored in dedicated chambers. The seeds are then processed into a nutritious paste often referred to as "ant bread," which sustains the colony. While seeds are the staple, this species also benefits from occasional insect protein, which is essential for supporting brood development and encouraging population growth. A small cricket or a piece of mealworm offered once or twice a week will be readily accepted.

Messor pergandei is best suited for intermediate keepers. While their seed-based diet simplifies feeding, they require a distinct environmental regime that differs from many other popular species. Providing a hibernation period at around twelve degrees Celsius is mandatory for long-term health and successful breeding. Additionally, managing their low humidity requirements while ensuring a reliable water source calls for a careful balance. These ants can be skittish when disturbed, and a sudden change in conditions can cause stress, so a stable, attentive approach is recommended.
Housing
A system that offers a dry nest connected to a more humid arena works perfectly for this species. The nest itself should be kept relatively dry, with humidity around thirty percent, while the outworld provides a water source and foraging area. A deep arena with a generous layer of substrate is ideal, as Messor pergandei love to dig and need ample space to store their seed harvest. Crucially, the entire setup must be placed in a quiet, vibration-free location. Like many Messor species, they are sensitive to light and disturbance during the early stages of colony establishment. A dark, calm environment will allow them to settle and expand with confidence.
First days after purchase
Upon receiving your colony, transfer the ants into their prepared formicarium and place the setup in a dark, quiet spot. Resist the urge to check on them frequently for the first few days. Ensure they have immediate access to a clean water source and a small supply of high-quality seeds. A single, small insect can also be offered to help reduce stress. Observe the ants from a distance to confirm they are beginning to explore and forage.
