Care Guide

Myrmecia brevinoda, commonly known as the giant bull ant, is one of the largest and most imposing ant species in the world. The queen, a truly formidable insect, measures between 28 and 36 mm in length, while workers range from 20 to 36 mm — making them nearly indistinguishable from the queen in size. Unlike many ants that show clear polymorphism, Myrmecia brevinoda lacks distinct worker castes; all workers are large, powerful, and equipped with massive mandibles and a potent venomous sting. Their enormous compound eyes give them exceptional vision, which they use to actively hunt prey rather than relying on pheromone trails. This species is considered primitive in many respects, retaining a solitary hunting style and a semi-claustral founding strategy, where the queen must leave the nest to forage for herself and her first brood.

The most distinctive feature of Myrmecia brevinoda is their predatory lifestyle. These ants are pure carnivores, feeding almost exclusively on live insects and other arthropods. They are ambush hunters that rely on speed and their paralyzing sting to subdue prey, often targeting large insects such as crickets, cockroaches, and even other ants. In captivity, they require a constant supply of protein-rich insects, supplemented occasionally with sugar water for energy. Unlike seed-harvesting species, they will not store food for long periods; fresh prey must be provided regularly. Their aggressive nature and powerful sting mean that keepers must exercise extreme caution during feeding and maintenance — even a minor disturbance can trigger a defensive response.

Care difficulty

Keeping Myrmecia brevinoda is an advanced undertaking, best suited for experienced hobbyists familiar with semi-claustral species and venomous ant care. The queen's need to forage during founding makes the first months particularly delicate — she must be provided with live prey and a dark, secure nest, yet she will also need to exit to hunt. Once the first workers emerge, the colony grows quickly but remains highly aggressive. Maintaining proper humidity and temperature is critical: 50–70% humidity and a temperature range of 20–26°C, with a distinct winter hibernation period at 14°C to mimic their natural seasonal cycle. Owners must be prepared for the long-term commitment of supplying live insects on a regular basis.

Housing

A suitable formicarium for Myrmecia brevinoda must prioritize security and escape prevention. These ants are strong climbers and can easily lift standard lids; a tight-fitting acrylic or glass setup with fluon or oil barriers is essential. The nest should have several chambers with stable humidity, preferably with a substrate that holds moisture like sand-clay mix. A large outworld is necessary for hunting, as workers need space to pursue prey. The outworld should be escape-proof but ventilated, and the entire setup must be placed in a quiet, vibration-free area. During hibernation, the colony should be moved to a cooler location (around 14°C) for 2–3 months, with reduced feeding but continued access to water.

First days after purchase

Upon receiving your Myrmecia brevinoda colony, transfer them immediately into a pre-prepared formicarium with a moistened nest area. Place the setup in a dark, calm environment and absolutely avoid any disturbance for at least 48 hours. Do not attempt to feed or open the nest during this acclimation period. After two days, offer a single small insect (like a flightless fruit fly or a small cricket) near the entrance. Observe from a distance — if the ants retrieve it, you can gradually resume normal feeding. Remember that semi-claustral queens need to forage; if you received a founding queen, ensure she has a small outworld where she can hunt safely. Patience and minimal interference are the keys to successfully establishing this magnificent but demanding species.
