Care Guide

Colobopsis explodens is one of the most extraordinary ant species in Southeast Asia, renowned for its unique and dramatic defensive strategy. Workers are equipped with hypertrophied mandibular glands that produce a sticky, toxic secretion. When the colony is threatened, certain older workers—called “minor soldiers” or “kamikaze ants”—contract their abdominal muscles so violently that their bodies rupture, spraying the noxious substance at predators. This self-sacrificial behavior is not only fascinating to observe but also highly effective against arthropod intruders and even small vertebrates. The queen is a robust dark brown to black individual, measuring up to 12 mm, while workers range from 4 to 7 mm and show a subtle polymorphism: larger workers have more developed heads and mandibles, though the size differences are less dramatic than in other Colobopsis species. Colonies are moderate in size, typically peaking at several hundred to around a thousand workers, and are founded claustrally—the queen seals herself inside a chamber and raises the first brood without foraging.

These ants are arboreal in nature, nesting in hollow twigs, bamboo, or pre-existing cavities in wood. Their diet in captivity mirrors their natural preferences: a mix of protein from insects such as fruit flies, roaches, or small crickets, and carbohydrates from honeydew or sugar water. They are keen honeydew gatherers in the wild, and providing a steady supply of diluted honey or sugar water will keep the colony energetic. Unlike many tropical species, Colobopsis explodens do not require a hibernation period, making them ideal for keepers who want year-round activity—provided the demanding humidity and temperature conditions are met.

Care difficulty

Keeping Colobopsis explodens is suited only for experienced ant keepers. The high humidity requirements, the need for stable warm temperatures, and the ants’ sensitivity to disturbance during colony establishment make this an advanced species. Moreover, the exploding defensive behavior, while spectacular, means that keepers must handle the setup with care to avoid triggering unnecessary worker losses. These ants are not aggressive toward humans unless directly provoked, but any disturbance near the nest entrance can cause sacrificial explosions.

Housing

A formicarium with excellent ventilation and high moisture retention is essential. The nest should be constructed from materials that can maintain near‑saturated humidity—natural cork, clay, or plaster work well. Provide a spacious outworld with a deep layer of substrate (coconut fiber or sand‑clay mix) for digging and a constant water source. Temperature must be kept between 24 and 28°C; a heating mat with a thermostat is recommended. Because these ants are arboreal, vertical nesting spaces or structures (such as bamboo tubes or drilled cork logs) are highly appreciated. Avoid any sudden vibrations or bright lights near the setup.

First days after purchase

Upon receiving your Colobopsis explodens colony, place the formicarium in a quiet, dimly lit location. Allow the ants to acclimatize for at least 48 hours without disturbance. Provide a drop of sugar water and a small piece of freshly killed insect near the entrance. Do not open the nest or tap the container—stress can lead to unnecessary explosions. Observe from a distance; you may notice workers exploring cautiously. Maintain humidity by moistening the nest substrate slightly more than usual during the first week. Once the colony starts feeding regularly, you can gradually introduce regular maintenance routines. Patience is key: these ants reward the dedicated keeper with one of the most unique behaviors in the myrmecophile’s world.
