These tiny ants, with workers measuring just 1.5–2.5 mm and a queen reaching 2–3 mm, belong to the trap-jaw group, equipped with lightning-fast mandibles that snap shut on unsuspecting springtails and other soft‑bodied arthropods. Despite their small stature, they form monomorphic colonies of 50–200 workers that are a delight to observe under magnification. The queen founds the colony claustrally, relying on her own reserves until the first workers eclose, but the real challenge begins once the colony is established.

Their diet consists exclusively of small insects, with a particular preference for live springtails (Collembola) and other tiny prey items. They do not accept standard feeder insects like fruit flies unless freshly hatched; instead, a steady culture of springtails is essential. The colony’s small size means they are extremely sensitive to disturbances, vibrations, and drying out. Any lapse in humidity can quickly prove fatal, and overfeeding can lead to mold issues in the nest. This species demands meticulous attention to microclimate and prey availability.
Housing
A formicarium for Strumigenys rogeri must prioritize humidity levels between 75–90% and stable temperatures of 24–28°C. A glass or acrylic setup with a built‑in hydration system — such as a plaster or clay nest that retains moisture — works best. The foraging area should be small and easy to monitor, with a substrate that holds humidity (e.g., a thin layer of coconut fiber or damp sand). Avoid large, open spaces; these ants feel most secure in tight, dark chambers. Regular misting or a drip‑based watering system is necessary, but be careful not to flood the nest. Because the workers are so tiny, any ventilation gaps must be blocked with fine mesh or cotton to prevent escapes. No hibernation is required, so year‑round heating and moisture control are vital.
First days after purchase
Upon receiving your Strumigenys rogeri colony, transfer it into the prepared formicarium as gently as possible. Place the setup in a quiet, dimly lit location and allow the ants to settle without disturbance for at least 24 hours. Ensure the nest area is sufficiently moist before introducing the ants, and provide a small number of springtails in the foraging area — but not so many that they overwhelm the colony. Avoid opening the enclosure unnecessarily; these ants are easily stressed by vibration and light. Over the first week, observe from a distance to confirm that the queen is laying eggs and the workers are hunting. If the colony seems reluctant to forage, gently tapping a few springtails into the nest entrance can trigger their predatory instincts.
