Care Guide

Myrmica bibikoffi is a charming and moderately sized species that rewards attentive keepers with lively, active colonies. The queen measures between five and six and a half millimeters, while workers range from three and a half to four and a half millimeters, giving the colony a uniform, delicate appearance. Unlike many popular beginner species, Myrmica bibikoffi is semi-claustral, meaning the founding queen must leave the nest to forage for food during the early stages of colony establishment. This behavior adds an extra layer of engagement for the keeper, as you get to witness the queen’s perseverance and gradually build a trusting relationship with her. Mature colonies can reach between three hundred and two thousand workers, and they are known for their energetic foraging and strong response to disturbances.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Myrmica bibikoffi is their dietary flexibility. These ants thrive on a varied menu that includes live or freshly killed insects, sugar water, and honeydew. Providing a balanced mix of protein and carbohydrates is essential for brood development and colony growth. Despite their small size, workers are voracious hunters, readily carrying off fruit flies, small crickets, or mealworm pieces. Because they are not seed specialists, you will need to ensure a reliable, constant supply of insect protein alongside sweet liquids. A drop of honey water on a small piece of foil placed in the outworld works well, but always watch for mold in humid conditions.

Care difficulty

This species is best suited for intermediate keepers. The semi-claustral founding phase demands patience and careful feeding — the queen will need small prey items offered regularly, and too much disturbance during this period can cause stress or failure. Once the first workers appear, the colony becomes more resilient, but maintaining proper temperature and humidity remains important. Myrmica bibikoffi prefers cooler temperatures between eighteen and twenty-five degrees Celsius, and high humidity around sixty to eighty percent. They also require a genuine hibernation period at about five degrees Celsius for several months, simulating their natural cycle. Skipping hibernation can weaken the colony and reduce longevity.

Housing

A formicarium with good ventilation and moisture control works well — consider a setup with a hydrating nest area and a separate outworld for feeding. The nest substrate should retain moisture without becoming waterlogged, as larvae are sensitive to both dryness and flooding. Because these ants can sting if provoked, choose a setup with secure tubing and escape-proof barriers. Provide a quiet, dimly lit environment, as vibrations and light stress the colony, especially during the first year.

First days after purchase

When your Myrmica bibikoffi colony arrives, place the test tube or formicarium in a calm, shaded spot and allow the ants to settle for at least a day. Offer a small drop of sugar water and one appropriately sized insect — a pinhead cricket or segment of mealworm — near the entrance. Resist the urge to check on them constantly. Over the following week, observe from a distance to ensure the queen is eating and the workers are active. Once they begin exploring and retrieving food, you can gradually introduce a more regular feeding schedule. With patience and steady care, your colony will flourish into a spirited and rewarding community.
