Care Guide

Solenopsis molesta, commonly known as the thief ant, is a fascinating species that lives up to its name. These tiny ants are masters of stealth, often nesting near larger ant colonies and stealing their brood or food stores. The queen measures 5 to 6.5 mm, while workers are remarkably small at just 1.5 to 2 mm, making them one of the smallest ants kept by hobbyists. Despite their minute stature, thief ants form healthy colonies ranging from 2,000 to 15,000 workers, and their claustral founding means the queen seals herself in a chamber and raises her first brood without needing to forage.

What makes Solenopsis molesta truly distinctive is their size and foraging behavior. Their tiny workers can infiltrate the nests of other ants unnoticed, stealing eggs, larvae, or food resources. In captivity, this natural boldness translates into an active and curious colony — they are not shy about exploring their setup, and their small size allows them to thrive in compact formicaria. Their diet is typical for many myrmicine ants: they require a balanced mix of insects for protein, sugar water for energy, and occasional other protein-rich treats. Because they are so small, food should be offered in finely chopped or liquid forms to make it accessible.

Care difficulty

Keeping Solenopsis molesta is rated intermediate. While they are not as demanding as some tropical species, their tiny size and need for a well-controlled microclimate require attention. Beginners may find the small workers easy to lose during maintenance, and the colony’s sensitivity to dry conditions can be challenging. However, for keepers with a bit of experience, these ants are rewarding and entertaining, especially when observing their sneaky foraging habits.

Housing

A suitable enclosure for thief ants should have high humidity, ideally between 50 and 70%, and a stable temperature range of 22–28°C. Because the workers are so small, any gaps or escape routes must be sealed with great care — they can squeeze through the tiniest openings. A formicarium with a narrow nesting chamber and a connected outworld works well. The nest area should be kept moist but not waterlogged, using a substrate like plaster, clay, or sand. Hibernation is essential: during winter, reduce temperatures gradually to around 10°C and keep the colony dormant for several months. Resume warmth slowly in spring.

First days after purchase

Upon receiving your thief ant colony, place the setup in a quiet, dimly lit area. These ants are easily stressed by vibration and bright light. Allow them at least a day to acclimate without disturbance. Provide a small drop of sugar water and a tiny piece of insect protein near the nest entrance. Observe from a distance to ensure the queen and workers are settling in. Avoid opening the formicarium unnecessarily — their small size makes them easy to lose. With patience and gentle care, your Solenopsis molesta colony will soon reveal its clever, industrious nature.
