Care Guide

Myrmica rugulosa is a charming and lively ant species that offers a rewarding challenge for the intermediate keeper. Unlike fully claustral species, the queen of Myrmica rugulosa is semi-claustral, meaning she must leave the nest to forage for food during the founding stage. This makes her early days particularly vulnerable and fascinating to observe. Once established, a mature colony grows to between five hundred and three thousand workers, with queens measuring five to six and a half millimeters and workers slightly smaller at three and a half to five millimeters.

One of the most distinctive features of Myrmica rugulosa is their need for a cool, temperate environment. These ants thrive at temperatures between eighteen and twenty-four degrees Celsius and require a high humidity level of fifty-five to seventy-five percent. They are also obligatory hibernators — a period of dormancy at around five degrees Celsius is essential for the queen’s long-term health and the colony’s seasonal rhythm. Their diet is protein‑driven: while they accept sugar water for energy, they rely heavily on insect prey such as fruit flies, crickets, or mealworms to feed their growing brood.

Care difficulty

Keeping Myrmica rugulosa is best suited for ant keepers who have already gained some experience with easier, fully claustral species. The semi-claustral founding process demands regular protein feeding and careful monitoring of the queen’s condition. Additionally, the colony’s sensitivity to temperature and humidity makes stable environmental control a priority. However, for those willing to provide these conditions, Myrmica rugulosa rewards you with high activity levels, rapid foraging, and a vibrant, bustling nest life.

Housing

A formicarium for Myrmica rugulosa should offer a well‑humidified nest chamber with good ventilation. Because these ants are sensitive to dryness, the nesting area must be regularly moistened — a substrate like sand‑clay mix or plaster works well. The outworld should be escape‑proof and large enough to accommodate their vigorous foraging. Provide a heat‑free zone: spot heating is not recommended as they prefer cool conditions. During hibernation, the entire setup should be moved to a fridge or cool cellar at a steady five degrees Celsius for at least three to four months. Always ensure the nest stays damp even during dormancy to prevent desiccation.

First days after purchase

Upon receiving your Myrmica rugulosa colony, transfer the ants into their prepared formicarium with minimal disturbance. Place the setup in a quiet, dimly lit area and allow them to acclimate for at least twenty‑four hours. Offer a drop of sugar water and a small insect (such as a pinhead cricket) near the entrance. Observe whether the queen begins foraging — if she does, she is adapting well. Do not disturb the nest for the first few days; instead, monitor humidity and water availability. Patience is key: these ants take time to settle, but once they do, their engaging behavior makes every effort worthwhile.
