Care Guide

Dolichoderus plagiatus is a charming and relatively compact species, with queens measuring 4–5 mm and workers slightly smaller at 3–4 mm. Their modest size belies a lively and industrious nature — these ants are agile climbers and avid foragers, often found in nature tending aphids or collecting honeydew from tree canopies. The colony grows steadily to a comfortable size of several hundred to a few thousand workers, forming a social structure that is both organized and responsive. Their blackish-brown bodies, sometimes with subtle iridescence, make them a delight to observe under good lighting.

Care difficulty

Keeping Dolichoderus plagiatus is well suited to intermediate keepers. The species is not overly demanding, but success does require attention to stable humidity and a proper hibernation cycle. Their claustral founding means the queen can raise her first workers without needing food during the initial phase, but once the colony is established they appreciate a varied diet of small insects (fruit flies, small crickets) alongside regular offerings of sugar water or honeydew. Mimicking their natural preference for sweet tree exudates can stimulate foraging activity and brood production.

Housing

A formicarium with good ventilation and moderate moisture is ideal. Dolichoderus plagiatus thrives at temperatures between 22 and 26°C, with humidity kept in the 50–70% range. Because these ants are naturally arboreal, they appreciate vertical structures, small branches, or textured surfaces that allow them to climb and explore. The nest area should be kept slightly darker and more humid than the foraging arena. Do not let the substrate dry out completely — a hydration system or regular light misting of the outworld helps maintain the microclimate. During winter, a dormancy period at 8°C is essential for long-term health; plan for a quiet, cool space where the colony can rest for several months.

First days after purchase

Upon receiving your colony, transfer the ants into their prepared formicarium and place it in a calm, low‑traffic area. Minimize vibrations and bright light, as these ants can be skittish during acclimation. Provide a droplet of sugar water and a small insect (if workers are present) to help them settle. Observe from a distance — resist the urge to open the nest frequently. Within a few days, the queen should resume egg‑laying and workers will begin foraging. Any initial stress will fade quickly if you maintain stable conditions and peace. Your patience will be rewarded by the sight of these graceful, tree‑loving ants building a thriving colony.
