Myrmecia
Myrmecia simillima
Care Guide
Myrmecia simillima, commonly known as the Australian bull ant, is a striking and formidable species that commands respect. These ants are among the largest and most visually impressive in the ant world, with queens reaching up to 24 mm and workers measuring between 14 and 18 mm. They possess powerful mandibles and a potent sting capable of causing significant pain, making them a true challenge for even experienced keepers. Unlike many ants, Myrmecia simillima are visual hunters with exceptional eyesight — they actively track and ambush prey, relying on vision rather than pheromone trails. Their colonies remain moderate in size, typically housing between 100 and 500 workers, but every individual is a formidable predator. The founding process is semi-claustral: the queen must leave the nest regularly to hunt for insects to feed her first brood, which requires careful observation and supplementary feeding from the keeper during this delicate stage.
Care difficulty
Keeping Myrmecia simillima is an expert-level undertaking. Their aggressive temperament, powerful sting, and specific needs make them unsuitable for beginners. The semi-claustral founding means the queen cannot be sealed away in a test tube; she needs access to a hunting arena and a steady supply of live insects from day one. Stress, vibrations, or sudden movements can easily trigger defensive behavior, and a single escape could be dangerous. These ants do not hibernate and require stable warmth year‑round, so reliable heating is essential. Only experienced keepers who are comfortable handling large, fast‑moving, and venomous ants should consider this species.
Housing
A spacious, escape‑proof formicarium is critical. Myrmecia simillima are agile climbers and jumpers, so the outworld must have high, smooth walls or a secure lid. The nest area should be kept at 22–28 °C with humidity around 50–70 %. Because they come from drier Australian habitats, they do not tolerate excessive moisture; a gradient with a dry zone and a slightly moistened area works best. Provide a large hunting arena where the colony can chase down crickets, roaches, or flies. They also accept sugar water and honeydew, but protein is the cornerstone of their diet — without it, the colony will not thrive. A clean, ventilated setup reduces stress and prevents mold, which these ants are particularly sensitive to.
First days after purchase
Upon receiving your Myrmecia simillima colony, place the formicarium in a quiet, dimly lit area and allow the ants to settle for at least 24 hours without disturbance. Check that the queen has access to water and a small insect (such as a pinhead cricket) within the outworld — do not drop prey directly into the nest, as this can cause panic. Observe from a distance; any sudden movement may provoke defensive stinging. Resist the urge to open the setup frequently. Over the first week, ensure the temperature stays stable and humidity does not spike. Patience and a steady hand are your greatest allies with this remarkable but demanding species.
